Prep standouts prepare for college ball

More than 30 high school athletes hailing from western Nevada County plan to take their games to the next level this fall, as they prepare to compete for college teams.

Ten of those athletes will receive scholarship funding for their athletic ability, either in the form of full or partial scholarships. The rest of western Nevada County's best will try to earn a spot on the roster as a walk-on athlete.

At Bear River High School, three Bruins have earned partial scholarships. Elana Faria will swim for San Jose State, Trevor Parker will play volleyball for Holy Names University and Patrick Scott will take to the Sonoma State basketball floor.

At Nevada Union, Taylor Japhet and Cole Stanford have each secured full scholarships. Japhet will join former NU volleyball teammates Sarah McAtee and Kylie Miraldi at San Jose State. Stanford will play football for Army, while studying at West Point.

Five more Miners have earned partial scholarships. Spencer Biersdorff will play golf at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Becca Devere will play basketball at Biola University. Zack Humphreys will swim at the University of California, Santa Barbara, while Haley Porter will swim for the UNLV Rebels and Trendon Amuzie (See story, above) will play football at Greenville College in Illinois.

One Forest Lake Christian athlete, baseball player Luke Taylor, has expressed plans to play at the college level next fall. Taylor, who carried one of the top batting averages in the nation this spring, told The Union in May that he was considering Bethany University in Santa Cruz and Simpson University in Redding.

Two more area prep standouts are headed for UC Davis to play soccer next year. And though they did not attend area schools, they are Grass Valley natives.

Dan and Pat Reese, who helped lead Jesuit High School's nationally ranked soccer program, signed national letters of intent to play for the Aggies in February. The twin brothers, who attended Mount St. Mary's School, also play for the San Juan Lightning U-19 club team, which was ranked among the top 10 in the country among nearly 1,200 Division I U-18 programs.

To follow these athletes in college, as well as dozens of other former Bruins, Falcons and Miners, be sure to catch The Union's weekly "Alumni Notebook," which is published Monday's in The Union Sports.
