Local motorcyclist killed in crash

A motorcyclist driving without a helmet on a private gravel road at high speed was found dead by his family Saturday morning.

Jeffrey Todd McManus, 41, was riding his 1974 Honda 350 XL dirt bike on Rudd Road north of Bitney Springs Road Friday evening. He apparently hit a dirt berm that sent him and the bike 33 feet into the air, then he hit a wooden power pole, according to reports from the California Highway Patrol.

McManus' ex-wife, Kristin McManus, said she became concerned when he did not return to the property on which they both lived, and she started searching for him Saturday morning.

“I found him” in the bushes on the side of the road, she said.

The family had last seen him at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, said CHP Officer Brant Hardin.

The condition of his body and sunglasses found at the scene indicate the collision occurred before sunset on Friday, Hardin said.

The CHP is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

Jeffrey McManus was born and raised in Grass Valley, Kristin McManus said. He worked as a roofing contractor.

“He enjoyed fishing and hunting,” she said. “He enjoyed being outdoors.”

The couple has two children, 17 and 14.

Funeral services are being arranged through Chapel of the Angels.
