The nine fires sparked by Sunday's lightning strikes in the Tahoe National Forest all were contained by Sunday evening, public affairs officer Ann Westling said.
Eight fires blazed on the American River Ranger District, from 1/4 acre to 2 acres in size. Two crews, two helicopters, five engines and one water tender were mopping up Monday.
One fire 5 miles west of Graniteville on the Yuba River Ranger District was contained at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at about 1 acre.
“We were able to pick these fires up quickly yesterday due to our fast initial attack and because there were very few other fires,” said Forest Duty Officer Donn Thane. Crews from the El Dorado National Forest, CalFire and the Tahoe National Forest responded.
Much warmer weather and lower humidity will return this week, as high pressure builds over the region — creating conditions for more fires.
In late June last year, lightning sparked about 2,100 fires across California.
