A blaze of unknown origin destroyed a home just south of Grass Valley early this morning, and the cause is under investigation according to Beverly Parr of the Nevada County Red Cross chapter.

Homeowners Peter and Jennifer Stein managed to escape the fire at 14334 Penn Road and save their pets, but all their belongings went up in flames, Parr and Peter Stein said.

“If it wasn't for our four smoke alarms all going off, my wife and I would be dead,” Stein said this morning. “I got out with a bathing suit, my wallet, my wife, our dogs and cats.”

Stein and neighbor Jeff Christensen came outside at 2 a.m. to find his wood pile next to the home ablaze, “Like gasoline was on it,” Stein said. “I don't know how a wood pile would spontaneously erupt,” so he wasn't surprised the fire is under investigation.

The fire spread to the home near just north of Alta Sierra and destroyed it quickly, Stein said.

It might have caused a wildfire, Stein said, but he and Christensen kept the vegetation wet with hoses and stopped its spread in the neighborhood before firefighters arrived.

The Red Cross has put the Steins up at a local motel, Parr said. An account for donations will soon be set up and The Union will print that information when it is finalized.
