Re: ‘Government-run health care — speaking from experience'

I would like to comment on Brian Berry's Other Voices. First, I am sorry for your loss and expenses. I think an important fact you overlooked, or failed to mention, about New Zealand, is the way that country protects itself from immigrants.

When traveling there, you can't have dirt on your shoes, bring food in, or show up without a passport. They don't have the diverse and undocumented population that the U.S. has. It is a much smaller population, and I think you forgot to mention what the tax burden is for the citizens there.

To be fair, I think all facts need to be addressed so that people can make educated decisions about what kind of health system they want. If the majority of Americans want to shoulder the burden of government-run health care, fine – let's just be more honest about the real costs.

Also, choice to not have health insurance must be accepted by those who don't. Either way, there are costs involved — it is not free in either type of system.
