Rep. McClintock appointment could lead to revival of Auburn dam project

U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock has been named the ranking Republican on the House Water and Power subcommittee, a position the freshman legislator from Granite Bay said will help him advocate for a dam on the American River.

McClintock was named to the position by U.S. Rep. Richard “Doc” Hastings of Washington state.

“Rep. McClintock has shown tremendous dedication and leadership on a number of national resources issues,” Hastings said in a prepared statement.

“There is now a great debate in Congress over whether government will merely ration shortages that it has created or whether it will return to its traditional goal of promoting abundance through the development of our nation's vast water and hydroelectric resources,” McClintock said in the statement.

In a brief interview with The Union, McClintock said it will be up to the California Water Resources Control Board, which abandoned research on the proposed Auburn dam last year, to reverse their decision.

“This position gives me a stronger voice to raise the issue,” McClintock said. “It certainly gives me a stronger position to express the virtues of the Auburn Dam.”

McClintock and his 4th Congressional District predecessor, John Doolittle, have long promoted a dam on the American River to produce hydroelectric power, saying it can produce energy for up to a million users.

Concerns over the seismic stability of a dam and construction in an environmentally sensitive area contributed to the abandonment of the concept that had been pursued for decades.
