Bear River's Stratton is out at home as Nevada City catcher Travis Maffucci applies the tag. Bear River beat Nevada City 20-1 to advance to Friday's championship game at Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley.
Since opening the 10-11 year-old All Stars tournament with an 8-5 win over Grass Valley, Bear River has lit up the Western Gateway Park scoreboard as if there were a power surge down in Penn Valley.
In their past two games, Bear River's All Stars have posted 33 runs on the board while limiting their opponents to just one.
On Wednesday night, Bear River beat Nevada City 20-1 to advance to Friday night's championship game.
“They're just a seasoned group of kids, who are putting in a lot of work,” Bear River manager Brian O'Brien said. “As coaches we've pushed them and as players they've responded.
“I'm proud of the way they're working together as a team and have been willing to put in the work.”
The real power display was at the plate, where Bear River broke the game wide open with an 11-run second inning and later added a seven-run fourth and final frame.
Bear Belding brought home four of those runs with a grand slam homer in the fourth.
The shot was his second round-tripper of the tournament. Matt Lopez also went deep in the inning, driving a line shot over the right-center field wall for a two-run tater.
David O'Brien went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored, while Caden McGowen was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and three runs scored for Bear River. Ryan Wagner drew a pair of walks and scored three runs, while Justus Stratton added a triple to the hit parade.
Belding drew the start on the mound, but three other Bear River pitchers also saw action. McGowen, Wagner and William Last joined Belding in a combined two-hit performance.
Max Arnds and Levi Love each singled for Nevada City, which will return to action at 5:30 p.m. today against Grass Valley.
Since falling in the tourney opener, Grass Valley has defeated both Sierra Foothills and Penn Valley by the 10-run rule.
“We've been telling the kids since that first game with Grass Valley, as soon as we played them, that we fully expect to see them again,” O'Brien said. “The kids know they're going to have to play at a different level if they expect to get a win against them.”
