Ryan McCarthy struck out seven and scattered four hits while shouldering the load for a complete-game victory, leading his Nevada City Junior All Stars to a 6-2 win over Bear River Tuesday at Condon Park in Grass Valley.
McCarthy, who allowed just one earned run over seven innings, also had a single and a pair of walks at the plate for Nevada City.
“He had a really complete game,” said Nevada City manager Rob Wood. “He played just out of his mind.
“I think the key to the game was we had a big first inning. We scored five in the first and after that there was no looking back because Ryan threw so well.”
Zach White doubled to lead off the game for Nevada City, setting the tone from the start, Wood said. Julian Belluomini, Dylan Conger and Bo Huff each all had singles for Nevada City in the victory.
“We also had a couple of great defensive plays,” Wood said. “Evan Kittle had a great play at third base, a diving play to get the runner at first. And we had a double play on a line drive to second. Brandon O'Callaghan caught a line drive and threw to Julian (Belluomini) at first.”
Nevada City catcher Rob Wood threw out three runners attempting to steal on the night.
The win moves Nevada City into Friday's championship game. Bear River will await the winner of tonight's game between Grass Valley and Penn Valley on Thursday.
