The suspect in Saturday night's deadly shooting of a 19-year-old former homecoming queen was killed Sunday in an armed confrontation with Santa Clara police, authorities said.
Ian Sloan York, 21, an airman stationed at Beale Air Force Base in Yuba County about 15 miles southeast of Grass Valley, was shot and killed by Santa Clara police in Saratoga Creek after an exchange of gunfire.
York had recently moved into a Marysville apartment with a woman identified as Kelly Roome, both originally from Indiana.
Marysville police had notified authorities that York possibly had fled to the Santa Clara area after the fatal shooting of Roome.
A man matching York's description was spotted about 11 a.m. by a Santa Clara police officer. When the officer tried to stop the man, York reportedly fired shots at the officer.
The officer returned fire, and York jumped a fence and fled toward nearby Saratoga Creek.
Additional officers from Santa Clara, a SWAT team, the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department and the California Highway Patrol responded and surrounded the area.
Officers and York exchanged shots, and York was struck and killed.
Sgt. Ray Carreira of the Santa Clara Police Department said the second confrontation with York took place less than an hour after the original encounter.
“All efforts were made to contain this person and protect the community,” Carreira said. “We have every reason to believe this was the suspect from Marysville.”
Marysville police identified the man killed as York. It was unclear why York had gone to Santa Clara, but York's MySpace page has a entry from Thursday that referred to plans to travel to the Bay Area that night, Carreira said.
“It's unfortunate that anyone more had to lose (his) life,” Marysville police Sgt. John Osbourn said of York's death.
Police were still investigating the case, including York's background and what might have prompted the shooting, Osbourn added.
York was an airman first class at Beale with the base Security Forces, spokesman Airman 1st Class Chuck Broadway said.
He had been stationed at Beale since December 2007. His record there did not have any other notable points, Broadway said.
York was wanted in connection with homicide and attempted homicide charges for gunning down the woman and wounding a 21-year-old man at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Cheim Boulevard.
Police reported receiving a 911 call reporting shots fired about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The shooting occurred after an earlier domestic dispute between York and the woman, police said.
The woman died at Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville of a single gunshot wound to the chest, police said. The male victim was treated for a gunshot wound at Rideout and released.
Indianapolis television station WTHR identified the woman as Kelly Roome, a 2009 graduate of Greenwood High School and the school's homecoming queen. York was also graduated from Greenwood in 2006, according to his MySpace page.
Wes Porter, manager at the apartments complex, said the couple moved in about three weeks ago.
