Despite a slowly-reviving economy, shop owners continue to turn to downtown Grass Valley to start new businesses, or move existing ones to take advantage of local and tourist foot traffic.
Island Smoothie has opened at 109 Bank St. in the Holiday Inn Express building, “A beachtro,” according to its sign.
“Anything you can find at the beach, we've got,” said owner Cheryl Neumann, who started the business with husband Mark Neumann. “We've got hot dogs, quesadillas, nachos, salads, wraps and six different children's meals.
“We have 10 different smoothies made of 100 percent, vine-ripened fresh fruit,” and cafe drinks like mochas, cappuccino and chai, “iced, blended or hot.”
The Neumanns will be giving 10 percent discounts to anyone employed in downtown Grass Valley on their work days for the restaurant Cheryl has planned for years.
They and others are encouraged to call in orders at 274-8554.
“I prayed for an idea and out of the blue came Island Smoothies,” Neumann said.
“God said, ‘Do you like the idea?' and I said, ‘Yes,' and he said, ‘Go to work.'”
Just about to come to work are the owners of the Bamboo Home Store at 108 Mill St., where the Birch Hall wine tasting room used to be. The store will offer products made of bamboo, including clothing.
“They're waiting on a little more inventory,” in hopes of opening soon, according to Downtown Grass Valley Association Executive Director Howard Levine. “The yogurt store is coming in July.”
Culture Shock Yogurt will be at 106 Mill St., according to Julie Jordan, the project administrator at the downtown association. Workers were busy inside the storefront Monday converting for the new operation.
Two wine tasting rooms will also be taking up new spaces downtown, Jordan said.
The Sierra Star Winery tasting room will open this month at 124 W. Main St. in the old El Dorado Savings Bank spot. Slated to take Sierra Star's old space at 209 W. Main St. is Avanguardia Wines for its tasting room.
