A person in costume comes to greet a pair of tiny spectators at the Grass Valley Independence Day parade.
Thousands of people lined the streets of downtown Grass Valley Saturday to watch marching bands, horse teams, a fantastic giant dragonfly, a Gold Rush shootout and other entries in the Independence Day parade.
Of all the entries, the one that earned the most enthusiastic response from the onlookers — and which also was the largest entry — was that of the Tea Party, a loosely knit group of people protesting the financial politics of Washington and Sacramento.
Wearing red T-shirts and holding signs with slogans such as “Taxed enough already” and “Sacramento, get out of my pocketbook,” the marchers were followed by motorcycles and vintage cars in a procession that stretched a block long.
The winners of the parade were:
Best Equestrian Award: No. 16, American Cow Girls
Best Junior Entry: No. 28, Gold Country Gynastics
Mayor's Award: No. 1, Town Crier, Robert Russell
Best Individual Award: No. 32, Lori Hodges
Best Marching Band: No. 9, Ophir Prison Band
Best Commercial Entry: No. 46, The Fur Traders
Best Fire Department Entry: No. 11, Rough and Ready
Best Nonprofit: No. 49, Sierra Stages Community Theater
The parade was hosted by the Grass Valley Downtown Association.
