Bear River's Junior All Stars turned a three-run lead into a 19-4 victory over host Grass Valley in the fifth inning Friday night at Condon Park, earning a berth against Nevada City in winner's bracket final on Tuesday night.
“The game was much closer than it appeared,” said Bear River coach Mike Sypnicki. “It was 7-4 in the fifth and then we scored 12 runs to put the game away.
“The kids again played good defense and got a lot of hits.”
Leading the way for Bear River was Jake Sypnicki's three hits and 3 RBIs. Caleb Van Patten also had three hits, while Sam Aguilar, Robert Bristol and Jake DePass each added two hits.
Andrew Reiss drew the start on the mound, while Aguilar came on in relief in the end for Bear River.
Grass Valley was led by Nick Eccarius and Cody Gardner, who each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Gardner also drove in a run.
Kalem Semore had a single and drove in a run, while Chris Gannon and Matt Paruszkiewicz each had a hit for Grass Valley.
Nevada City 10, Sierra Foothills 8
Nevada City advanced to the Area 2 Junior winner's bracket final by beating Sierra Foothills 10-8 Thursday.
Zach White pitched four strong innings including 6 strikeouts in the first three innings, striking out the side in the second inning.
Nevada City started slow at the plate but got things going in the third inning, scoring four runs and then continuing to pound the ball in the fourth scoring another five runs.
Brandon O'Callaghan led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double. Julian Belluomini went 2-for-2 and Ryan McCarthy added two singles.
The big hits came in the fourth with a double to right by Dylan Conger, followed up with a triple by Evan Kittle. Rob Wood and Julian Belluomini each added doubles during the inning.
Cameron Townsend also added an RBI bunt in the third inning as Nevada City mounted a comeback.
Julian Belluomini, Ryan McCarthy and Rob Wood each threw one inning to close out the game.
“It was a great team effort,” said Nevada City manager Rob Wood. “The defense stepped up when it needed to. Kyle Upton made a diving catch in center field ... Rob Wood played a strong game behind the plate for six innings, which slowed their running game down.”
“I was really proud of these young men. They showed great character by not getting down after Sierra Foothills made a strong run by scoring five runs in the top of the third inning. They came right back and took control of the game.”
Nevada City and Bear River will take the field at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday with a berth in the Area 2 championship game on the line.
Major All Stars
Bear River 17, Grass Valley 1
Bear River might have gotten off to a slow start in Thursday's opening-round win over Penn Valley, but that wasn't the case Friday night in a semifinal game against Grass Valley at Pioneer Park in Nevada City.
Racking up 13 hits on the night, Bear River scored a 17-1 win in four innings.
“Our bats woke up today,” said Bear River manager James Toft. “We came out as a totally different team and put the bat on the ball from the get-go.”
Bear River scored four runs in the first and added five more in the second for a 9-1 lead. Eight more runs in the fourth inning ended the game due to the tourney's 10-run rule.
while Tyler Toft and Kyle Soria, Brett Solomon and Michael Scudero each had two hits. Solomon and Scudero each had a double.
Bear River's bats overshadowed a combined no-hitter from the team's pitchers. Scudero picked up the win on the mound, throwing the first three innings. He struck out four and walked three while allowing no hits and one run. Anderson pitched the final inning, striking out two and allowing no hits.
Nevada City, which beat Sierra Foothills Thursday, will face Bear River in Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. game at Pioneer Park.
Senior All Stars
Grass Valley 16, Lincoln 6
The Grass Valley Senior All Stars defeated the Lincoln All Stars 16-6 on Wednesday night behind strong pitching performances from Connor Holland and Tanner Thiesing.
Holland pitched the first five innings, giving up six runs, four unearned, nine strikeouts and three walks for the victory. Thiesing came in and recorded the last two outs of the game on strikeouts.
Grass Valley kept the pressure on Lincoln the entire game by scoring in every inning behind a balanced attack from their offense. Miles Ward led the attack going 4-for-4 with a solo home run, three runs scored and 4 RBIs.
Damon Bell had a big day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and 4 RBIs. Thiesing went 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs with a double and a solo home run. Scott Petroskey scored three times going 2-for-2 with a double and Holland crossed the plate three times as well and had 2 RBIs to finish the scoring for the Senior All Stars.
