Chris Thibodeau's early success in his rookie season of racing Super-D mountain bikes clearly was not just beginner's luck.
The former Nevada Union High School running back added Super-D racing to his resume this season, after recently taking up cross country mountain biking and road race cycling.
Thibodeau took right to his new ride, winning the California State Championship series in the Men's 19-29 age division.
“It felt so good to step onto the top step of the podium and put on that winner's jersey,” said Thibodeau, who races for the Sierra Express/Sho-Air Racing Team. “I have been wanting a winner's jersey for some time now, so that was really special for me.
“I have put in countless hours of hard training and this is the pay-off for the hard work.”
Thibodeau took second place at Rim Nordic in Big Bear on Saturday, which sealed the Super-D series title. One day later he posted his best finish of the year in the 25-29 Expert class, by finishing third.
“I have to thank everyone who supports me,” Thibodeau said. “My mom, Sherri Thibodeau, who is my biggest supporter. Chuck Ross, who is a great friend and my coach. He has done so much for me and is responsible for bringing me to the level I am competing at today.
“And also Duane Strawser from Tour of Nevada City Bike Shop for all his support.”
Thibodeau now shifts his focus to the U.S. National Championship at Granby, Colo. on July 16-19.
