So Jordan Jiannino, what's the secret to going 4-for-4 at the plate in your District 11 Little League All Stars debut?

“Getting rest,” Jiannino smiled through a set of shiny braces, “and Jim Souza.”

Nevada City's manager was wearing a wide smile himself after watching his Major All Stars score an opening-round 14-3 win over Sierra Foothills Thursday night at Pioneer Park.

Jiannino helped Nevada City break the game wide open in the fourth inning, stretching an early lead to 10-1 by the end of the frame. Jiannino drove home a run with a double, which was followed by an RBI single by Joey Souza.

Souza, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, also played the closer role on the pitcher's mound for Nevada City. The fourth arm thrown at Sierra Foothills Thursday, Souza finished the game off an inning early by virtue of the tournament's 10-run rule.

Cooper Valin drew the start and the win, throwing the first two innings before giving way to Dylan McClure of an inning and a third. Jiannino then threw two-thirds of an inning before Souza took the hill.

Nevada City's All-Star team is anchored by seven members of the league's Dodgers squad that finished second to the Bear River Astros in the Area 2 Tournament of Champions last week.

“That's a great way to start,” said Jim Souza, NC's skipper. “We're just getting them to come together and thinking as a team. They're great kids. No attitudes on this team.

“And you always look like a good coach when you score 14 runs.”

Nevada City will advance to the winner's bracket final on Tuesday, where it will face the winner of tonight's 7:30 p.m. matchup between Bear River and Grass Valley. Foresthill-Divide faces Penn Valley in the 5 p.m. consolation bracket opener.

Bear River 5, Penn Valley 4

Penn Valley took control of the game early, but Bear River battled back to score a 5-4 win in the bottom of the sixth inning in Thursday's second game at Pioneer Park.

With the score tied 4-4, Brett Solomon drew a walk to lead off the inning for Bear River. Michael Scudero followed with a double to put runner's at second and third with no outs. Hunter Cramer then drove a ground up the middle to score Solomon for the game-winner.

“It was a slow start,” Bear River manager James Toft said. “I think the guys had some butterflies going. We didn't get a feel for it for a couple of innings, but once you get a big hit everybody in the dugout relaxes.”

Tyler Toft provided a big hit for Bear River in the bottom of the fourth, blasting a solo home run over the left-center field fence. Toft also drove home a run in the bottom of the fifth with a single to knot the game at 4-4.

Travis Whitehead added a triple for Bear River and scored a run.

Robert Hillebrand struck out seven over 4 2/3 innings, before giving way to Brett Solomon, who struck out one and walked one over 1 1/3 innings for the win.
