Nevada City Classic race director Duane Strawser was quoted in a story for Tuesday's edition of the New York Times, which offered a preview of Lance Armstrong's ride at the upcoming Tour de France.
Strawser said that Armstrong had actually left Nevada City without the champion's trophy after winning the 49th annual Nevada City Classic. An Armstrong representative later contacted Strawser, requesting the trophy to be mailed to his home in Texas.
“The guy's won the Tour de France seven times, so we were thinking, why would he ever want the trophy from our little race?” Strawser told the Times. “But wouldn't you know it, the phone rang.”
The story also notes that the Nevada City Classic victory was Armstrong's first since his 2005 victory at the Tour de France.
