Bear River Juniors blank Penn Valley

Bear River's Junior All Stars broke out the bats and kept Penn Valley's quiet for most of the night in the opening round action of Little League All Stars at Condon Park Wednesday.

Robert Bristol threw a complete-game shutout for Bear River, striking out six, walking one and allowing just two hits.

“When you get in these tournaments, and we've said it before, everybody can hit and everybody is just solid,” said Bear River coach Mike Sypnicki. “Pitching and defense wins. David Chorjel and Jake Sypnicki made all the plays up the middle and (Penn Valley) never got their offense going.”

Andrew Reiss had a two-hit night at the plate, driving in two runs for Bear River. Brandon Bump had a two-run double, Jake Sypnicki went 1-for-2 with a walk and 2 RBIs and Sam Aguilar scored two runs from the leadoff position. Bristol also added a double to the Bear River cause.

Bear River moves into winner's bracket semifinal, where it will face Grass Valley at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Today's other half of the semifinal bracket will pit Nevada City against Sierra Foothills at 6:30 p.m.
