Medical pot meeting in Nevada City Tuesday

Nevada City officials will consider extending their moratorium on allowing medical marijuana dispensaries in the city limits during a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 30.

City Council members had already approved a moratorium for 45 days. Now, they will consider extending that for an other 10 months and 15 days. Grass Valley recently extended a similar moratorium there.

Leaders had wanted more time to develop a policy regarding dispensaries. The stores, which are legal under California law but illegal under federal law, have stirred some controversy. Law enforcement has reported an increase in crime around shops in large cities such as Los Angeles. In Colfax, city officials have said a dispensary there has not caused any increase in criminal activity.

Nevada City resident Harry Bennett told city officials he was interested in opening a dispensary in town and had pulled a business license in April. Council members passed the moratorium on May 13.

The public hearing will be held at City Hall, 317 Broad St., downtown Nevada City. Council will consider an emergency interim ordinance extending the existing moratorium.
