Deborah Whitney of Shady Flat — A Dauntless Girl of the Golden West by Katie Willmarth Green

To read this novel is to meet the author, but more about Katie later.

Deborah Whitney is a 10-year-old girl who lived in the latter part of the 18th century in Downieville on the north fork of the Yuba River to be near the school that Deborah attended.

As the novel unfolds, Deborah and her wisely guiding parents are moving to their summer home at Shady Flat some 4 miles up the Yuba River.

Deborah looks forward to this move with great enthusiasm. She anticipates greater independence in her new environment, interaction with all the wild things that she imagines and a host of adventures. Both of these activities she realizes in full measure.

Some of the adventures are a bit more than she asked for. On the other hand they are all enjoyed. This is a charming tale of a 10-year old girls meeting with all the joys and problems typical of that age and that time. She meets with disappointments, peer pressure, and resolves her problems with a keen intelligence. Some of the fun times are not recognized then as educational experiences.

This book has received glowing revues, most notably in The Midwest Book Review where it was “highly recommended.” While girls can appreciate best the life of a 10-year old girl, the novel can certainly be read with pleasure by adults.

Now to the author; Katie Green is an expatriate living in Wisconsin but she remembers fondly her years at Shady Flat with her family, hence this charming tale. My memory of Katie stems primarily from a presentation that she gave the Yuba County Historical Society which included a tour of the town of Downieville, Shady Flat, the very cabin where she spent time with her family, and the Kentucky Mine where she gave us the history of the mine and the technique used to obtain the gold from the ore. The lady knows her history.

The book is available at the Book Seller on Mill Street priced at $20 and through the Yuba County Historical Society where members will receive a 10 percent discount.
