Aanestad requests pay cut

Sen. Sam Aanestad, D-Grass Valley, has asked California Controller John Chiang to slice 5 percent from his paycheck, saying it's doing his “part to ease the historic deficit facing the state.” Read the entire letter here:

June 24, 2009

The Honorable John Chiang

Controller, State of California

300 Capitol Mall, Ste 1850

Sacramento, CA  95814

 Dear Controller Chiang:

During this fiscal crisis, I believe we all must do our part to ease the historic deficit facing the state. I am writing to request a 5 percent decrease in my Senate salary effective immediately. Please ensure that my paycheck reflects this.

I share your concern for prompt action from the Legislature to enact a comprehensive budget solution. Please know that I am committed to achieving this goal. However, it must be done without tax increases and with honest budget accounting. The consequences of inaction or further gimmicks will only cause the difficult decisions before us to become even more painful.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (916) 651-4004.

Yours truly,

SAM AANESTAD

Senator, 4th District

cc: The Honorable Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor

The Honorable Darrell Steinberg, Senate President pro Tem

The Honorable Dennis Hollingsworth, Senate Republican Leader

Mr. Greg Schmidt, Secretary of the Senate
