A Brownsville man shot his father during an argument over the family dog, a Yuba County Sheriff's Department official said Monday.
Jason James Goddard, 38, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident late Sunday at the Pinewood Trailer Park, 16875 Willow Glen Road. He was being held Monday in Yuba County Jail on $500,000 bail.
The father, 58-year-old Stanley Goddard, was airlifted to an area hospital and underwent emergency surgery. He was in stable condition Monday, said Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Melanie Oakes.
Goddard was in bed when he was hit one time in the lower right abdomen, Oakes said.
The Sheriff's Department received several calls from the trailer park about the shooting at about 9:30 p.m.
A family member of the victim initially said Stanley Goddard had accidentally shot himself. Deputies became suspicious and brought Jason Goddard in for questioning. He was arrested at 2:40 a.m. at the Sheriff's Department.
Goddard admitted pointing a revolver at his father but said it went off accidentally, Oakes said.
"Although Jason claims that the gun accidentally went off, it doesn't appear to be accidental based on the evidence and statements we have obtained so far. He also admitted to intentionally retrieving and pointing the gun at his father during the argument," Oakes said.
Goddard is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Information on the previous crime was not immediately available.
