Big biking news happened this weekend here in Nevada City, where Lance Armstrong won the 49th Nevada City Classic. But other biking news was being made by Nevada City 18-year-old Graeme Pitts at The Wildflower Rush Mountain States Cup in Crested Butte, Colo.

Returning from a minor shoulder injury that prevented him from competing in The U.S. Open at Diablo Freeride Park in New Jersey over Memorial Day, Pitts made adequate recovery to head to Colorado last week to spend a few days training before the race.

Colorado was experiencing similar weather to Nevada City, chilly, with thunderstorms mixed with partial sun. At almost 11,000 feet in the Rockies, anything is possible. It rained the night before the race, but the course was excellent for race time, according to Pitts, who is in the middle of his rookie Pro year.

Out of more than 60 riders, Pitts qualified fourth, which put him out of the gate for his race run near last. Riding for Santa Cruz Bicycles/Kirt Voreis AllRide Academy, Pitts made an excellent comeback with a sixth place finish against an array of top nationally ranked pro riders.

Pitts heads back to Colorado on his 19th birthday in July to prepare for the National Championships at Sol Vista.
