Shelley Olds made her second trip to Nevada City Sunday and also stepped onto the top spot on the podium for a second time.
Olds, a member of the ProMan team, took advantage of an early break by Helene Drumm, one of her teammates as she cruised with the pack. Eventually, as other race leaders tired from chasing Drumm, Olds was able to pull into the lead.
“She set that up for me,” Olds said. “And I knew what it was like to be out front by myself.
Sunday's Women's Pro 1, 2, 3 race read like a repeat performance of Olds' ride through Nevada City two years ago.
Midway through the race, Olds was all by herself at the finish line each lap. National road and criterium champion Brooke Miller finished second, riding for Team TIBCO, and former Czech national champ Katerina Nash, who now lives in Truckee and rides for the Luna Pro team, took third place.
Olds said she wasn't only thrilled by her second win in Nevada City, but also the opportunity to race in front of such a large crowd.
“This place is just amazing,” she said. “Nowhere else where I've raced are the people out there cheering like that. No matter where you are on the course, there were people cheering for you.
“And I've never taken a victory lap like that where so many people were cheering. I just had to soak it up.”
Ron Miller Junior Grand Prix
Eighteen-year-old Ian Boswell just got back from riding the Peace Race in the Czech Republic, as well as a number of other eastern European races, but the Bend, Ore. native didn't seem to be a bit jet-lagged.
Boswell, a Hot Tubes team member, blew away a large field to win the Ron Miller Junior Grand Prix in his second race at Nevada City, having placed third as a 14-year-old.
“I was actually able to get ahead on the downhill,” he said. “On the bottom turn, I was able to take the turn really fast.”
Boswell finished ahead of Sam Bassetti, racing for All-Sport/Team Swift, and third place Charlie Avis, a member of the U.S. National Team, in the 17-18 year-old division.
A few hours after winning the junior event, Boswell was entered in the Men's Pro 1, 2 in order to race with the likes of Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer. His race finish was not available at press time.
“I'm going to try to keep up with them as long as I can,” he said. “It's another level altogether.”
In the 15-16 boys division, Alexander Freund of the Davis Bike Club took first. James laberge of Team Specialized was second and Yuma Koishi fo the San Jose Bike Club was third.
Kyle Clayton, Matthew Valencia and Henry Nelson went one, two, three, respectively, in the 13-14 division. SoCal teammates Joseph Tarrant and Nicholas Castellano were first and second in the 10-12 division.
On the girls side, Somersby Jenkins of Echelon Santa Barba was the 15-16 year-old division winner, with Shayna Powell (Ventura USA) taking second and Katherine Pollard (www.TeamMadCat.com) third.
Margaret Jones of Chico won the 17-18 class, while Dominique Van Den Dries (ProMan) and Francsiska Barthel (Echelon SB) won the 13-14 and 10-12 divisions, respectively.
