Cherry-pickin' fun at North San Juan

On Saturday, the 110th annual Cherry Festival will take place in North San Juan, an old gold mining town, along Highway 49. This long-standing tradition from the gold rush days includes lots of free, family-friendly fun.

The Festival starts with a small parade at 10 a.m. with lots of local color that proceeds down Highway 49 for a quarter of a mile. The parade is short but filled with fun and varied participants. Drummers lead the parade that includes fire engines from several fire fighting agencies, floats by local businesses such as “Gardening,” Kitchen's Nursery; Earthworks; and community members such as Post Office, Troupe De Trash, old cars, motorcycles, go-carts, kids on bikes or racy lawnmowers.

Last year, a monster-sized industrial truck wowed the crowds. Smokey Bear is a favorite of all the kids and is available for greeting for a short time after the parade. Kids will be able to check out the fire trucks as well as the old hand pull fire cart.

Following the parade, a day of free activities and entertainment will be held at the North San Juan Community Hall and lawn in the center of town. Live music and entertainment will go on all day on an outdoor stage. The line-up includes varied musical styles from blues to rock-and-roll, bluegrass, and folk.

Another favorite at the festival is the cherry pie eating contest, including both kids and adults. Competition is fierce and slots limited, so sign up early and be prepared to chow! The winner will receive a prize!

Surrounding the stage on the lawn will be booths that include arts and crafts, community groups, plants, and flea-market tables. Kids can get their faces painted or play a game. Get free advice on reducing fire hazard and beating scotch broom invasion. There is space for additional booths and venders. Both vendors and boothies need to arrive by 9 a.m. to set up. The fee for vendors is on a donation basis. Contact Rusty for information and sign up at 292-3767.

Food will be available from local businesses and supporters including the Ridge Stop Café, the Brass Rail, and 49er pizza. As well as from community services group such as the North San Juan Activities and Improvement Center, and the Senior Center. The North San Juan Activities and Improvement Center will be giving out free root beer floats to the first 30 fathers with family in celebration of Father's Day.

Come join the fun. This is a family-oriented event, so it is alcohol free. Bring your family, bring your friends!
