A chaotic free fight on a Yuba City riverbank sent two people to the hospital and a Woodland man to jail, according to Sutter County sheriff's authorities.
Deputies arrested Luis Arellano Gonzalez, 37, after the melee in which at least 10 men and women assaulted a man at Mosquito Beach, Sgt. Merle Weber said.
Gonzalez was booked at the Sutter County Jail and was being held Monday night on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, battery and felony vandalism. Bail was set at $50,000.
The Sheriff's Department responded about 9 p.m. Sunday to reports of a violent brawl off Second Street. Deputies arrived to find attackers punching Vicente Madrigal, 36, some also beating him with beer bottles, according to Weber.
Hours after the assault, gathering details remained difficult.
"When we arrived people were fleeing in their cars, on foot, jumping over the levee, running into the ballfield," said Weber. The Sheriff's Department also reported finding the windows smashed out of one nearby car and another vehicle flipped onto its roof.
Two people injured in the scrum were treated and released from Rideout Memorial Hospital but also face possible misdemeanor vandalism charges for damaging each other's cars.
Weber said Madrigal, 36, and Victoria Raya, 32, allegedly got into an argument that triggered the fight.
Madrigal was admitted to the hospital with facial and scalp cuts after telling deputies an attacker whipped him with a chain, while the extent of Raya's injuries was not clear.
Weber said no firearms were recovered at the scene.
