Fiddlers, firefighters, fun in the western county

Mark your calendars for June 20 when internationally renowned Scottish fiddler, Alasdair Fraser, will be coming to Western Gateway Park in Penn Valley.

Alasdair Fraser and more than 120 enthusiastic musicians will put on a great musical concert right here on the park stage. Gates for the picnic concert will open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7:30 p.m.

The last Alasdair Fraser concert I went to had everyone dancing in the aisles so come prepared to have fun. Bring low-back folding chairs and a picnic super and enjoy a wonderful summer evening with world class entertainment. You can purchase tickets in advance at Yabobo, Briarpatch, the Bookseller, or Cherry Records, or you can get them at the gate. For more ticket information, call 477-0708.

Another great event coming up on Sunday, June 28, is the annual Rough & Ready Secession Days. The history of Rough & Ready is pretty colorful; the combination of mining taxes and corrupt politicians led R&R to secede from the union back in the spring of 1850.

No longer part of the Union, they were considered “foreigners” and therefore not allowed to buy alcohol to celebrate the Independence Day holiday. Wanting the alcohol and the July 4 party more than their freedom, they abolished their Great Republic of Rough & Ready and rejoined the United States after only three months of independence.

Since the early 1970s, Rough & Ready has held an annual celebration to commemorate their unique history.

The day's events take place on the grounds of the Fruit Jar Picker's Opry Palace which is next door to the historic Fippin Blacksmith Shop and across from the grocery store in downtown Rough and Ready. The R&R Volunteer Fire Department will start the day off with a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Fruit Jar Pickers will be on hand to play their unique old-time country and gospel music complete with washboards, homemade instruments and lots more. There will also be art and craft booths featuring area vendors and blacksmith shop demonstrations. The grange will be sponsoring a bake sale, the Firehouse Auxiliary will sponsor a hot dog lunch and the 4-H kids will be selling snow cones. Free children's activities will be sponsored by the R&R chamber to include a bounce house, petting zoo, and face painting

The highlight of the day is a lighthearted play that takes place at around 10:15 a.m. and gives the history of the succession; they hang the bad guys with lots of audience boos and hisses. There will be a stage set up with shade cloth over the seating area for the 90-minute play. This will be a great day for the entire family… good food, good company, a little bit of local history and a whole lot of fun.

While in the area, check out Coufos Cellars just up the road at the corner of Rough and Ready Highway and Rough and Ready Road. Specializing in Rhone style wines, their tasting room is open from 1 – 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
