Marysville summer school axed

Summer school classes planned in the Marysville Joint Unified School District have been canceled, say officials who link the loss of classes to cutbacks in state funding.

"It's cutting deep and it hurts," said Bob Eckardt, principal at Lindhurst High School. "I wish the state did not put us in this position."

About 400 students planned to take summer school classes at the high school, Eckardt said.

Gary Cena, principal of Marysville High School, said about 120 students were expected to take classes that were to begin June 17.

Cena said this is the first such loss of summer school classes he's seen in his 22 years in education.

"We haven't had an economic situation like this since the Great Depression," he said.

Gay Todd, district superintendent, had said in March that more crowded classes were anticipated this summer because state funds that cover class costs had decreased by 15 percent. Lindhurst and Marysville high schools, along with one intermediate school, were going to offer summer school, Todd had said.

Doreen Osumi, assistant superintendent of education services for the Yuba City Unified School District, said summer school classes start Wednesday at River Valley High School and Gray Avenue Middle School.

Federal funds and money from intervention programs to assist students academically will pay for the classes, Osumi said.

More than 900 students will be enrolled at River Valley for summer school and about 200 are at Gray Avenue, Osumi said.
