On Saturday, May 30, members of the Gold Country Gobbler Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation took 17 children who are members of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program on a fishing trip to Stampede Lake in search of Kokanee salmon.
The federation hosts this annual trip as part of their youth outreach program, designed to introduce young people to conservation and the outdoor tradition.
The JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) program continues to influence youth by hosting more than 1,000 JAKES events nationwide each year.
Everyone had a great time being out on the water, learning about fishing and all it entails, and, of course, catching fish.
Afterward, there was a wonderful barbecue and Gary Determan spoke with the children about wildlife preservation and gave demonstrations on how to call turkeys.
The federation then gave each of the children insulated lunch boxes filled with goodies to help remember their day.
This was the sixth year that the federation has hosted this event for Big Brothers Big Sisters. A huge thank-you goes out from Big Brothers Big Sisters to everyone who made this memorable day possible by giving their time, fishing expertise, boats, barbecuing skills and general good spirits; Greg Elkins; Gary Grandfield; Gary and Pamela Determan; Danny Granholm; Dick Law; Larry Edmondson; Mark Porter; Brett Brady; Mike Ford; Mike Brown; Duane Daniels; and Ed Fisk.
