Readers' Corner: June 3, 2009

Thanks from the Gold Run kids

These three youngsters — Ian Glaspey, Gabe Spiropoulos and Andy O’Brien — attend Gold Run School in Nevada City. Their teacher, Linda Miller, wanted to send a big “thank you” to the folks at Nevada City Public Works for installing new wheelchair-accessible sidewalks near the school.

Linda writes: “Our classroom (has) K-2 students with severe disabilities, including three wheelchair students. We especially appreciate having access to the Seven Hills community on our school walking field trips.”

Linda works with Special Education Services out of the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools office.

Smokin’ in the Oaks

The very first BBQ cook-off of its kind in Penn Valley will start this Friday with dinner and music and continue through the weekend. Take a look at the story on page C1 of today’s Flavor section.

Vietnam vets meeting

Did you see the story we ran May 16 about Estelle Rees Arroyo, the 92-year-old Grass Valley lady who just earned her bachelor’s degree from Sac State?

Estelle wanted readers to know about the meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday of the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America. It’s at the Veterans Memorial Building, 255 S. Auburn St., Grass Valley.

Pennies for Hospice

This weekend, Friends of Hospice will be happy to help you with the loose change weighing you down.

Volunteers with the Pennies Can fund drive will be collecting donations in front of SPD Market in Grass Valley and Nevada City, at Holiday Market in Penn Valley, and at Raley’s Supermarket, Long’s Drug and B&C True Value Home & Garden Center, all in Grass Valley.

All proceeds go to Hospice of the Foothills.
