We keep hearing from two of our elected politicians how unfriendly California is to business. Its overtaxed and overregulated. Really?
An article in The Union a few years ago told about tax rebates paid to California companies and corporations, some of which hadnt paid any tax to begin with. In 2004 these rebates came to around $84 million.
In a December column, Thomas Elias informed us that appreciated commercial properties often dont get the property tax raised when theyre sold, as our residential properties do. This is not unfriendly to business, its unfriendly to citizens.
Assemblyman Dan Logue and Representative Tom McClintock never give any actual data on this supposed overtaxing, and Id like to see some numbers real corporate profits, how much tax they pay, and how much their CEOs take home.
Citizens shouldnt have to sacrifice to enhance the profit margins of corporations, and our elected politicians shouldn't be lobbying us on behalf of corporations that want ever more tax breaks. If Logue and McClintock want to be corporate lobbyists, they should resign their elected seats and find work at a lobbying firm.
