A big-rig truck driver was arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence along the High-way 20 detour after another driver informed the California Highway Patrol.
Jeff Emmett Cornell, 51, of Nevada, was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. while he was stopped at the inspection station set up by the CHP at the junction of Highway 20 and Interstate 80, said Officer Arturo Gutierrez. The inspections have been set up for trucks being detoured onto Highway 20 at night during construction on Interstate 80 to make sure the vehicles are mechanically sound. Trucks then are being escorted as far as Highway 49 in Nevada City to keep them at safe speeds, Gutierrez said.
As trucks were waiting their turn for inspection, a truck driver had spoken to this driver and smelled alcohol on his breath, Gutierrez said. He relayed that information to officers.
Cornell was stopped and officers determined he was under the influence. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and driving a commercial vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .04 or more, booked into Nevada County jail and released. The big-rig was impounded.
