A man suspected of holding up a Flyers convenience store in Grass Valley at gunpoint was arrested at 5 p.m. Friday on suspicion of armed robbery and a sexual attack.
Alfredo Alonzo-Hernandez was taken to the police station for questioning prior to being booked at the Nevada County jail, Grass Valley police Sgt. Jason Perry said.
Alonzo-Hernandez was arrested at the McDonalds restaurant on Nevada City Highway, the same place where a glass door was broken out before dawn Friday during an alleged attempted burglary there. Police brought Alonzo-Hernandez out from the back door of the restaurant, and he was wearing a blue work shirt similar to that of other McDonalds employees, though The Union could not confirm late Friday whether the suspect was, in fact, a McDonalds worker.
Alonzo-Hernandezs booking charges included burglary, strong arm robbery, threatening a crime and sexual battery. Bail was set at $90,000.
Earlier in the day, police Capt. Dave Remillard said the person who robbed the Flyers store at Brunswick Road and Sutton Way could be responsible for the McDonalds break-in, too.
McDonalds manager Edna Mora said the restaurant was entered during the night; the burglary was discovered by a worker who arrived at 4:15 a.m.
They tried to break into the safe, but they couldnt, Mora said. They didnt take anything except some bandages. He must have been bleeding.
At 5:10 a.m., a man brandished a gun in front of the clerk at the Flyers store and demanded money, which she gave him out of the cash register, Remillard said. It was not immediately known how much allegedly was stolen.
Witnesses described the thief as a young man, about 5-feet-3-inches tall, with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. He was wearing a baseball cap backwards and a hoodie sweatshirt.
The robber left on foot, and a search dog brought in from Placer County tracked him to a boggy area behind the Rite Aid Pharmacy, where the dog lost the scent.
He may have hid there and then left, Remillard said.
No information was immediately available on the alleged sexual assault. No one else was injured during the armed robbery, Flyers employees said. They referred all other questions to their corporate office.
Mike Belles of store owner Nella Oil Co. said he could not disclose how much money was stolen.
The police are involved, and were letting them drive the investigation, Belles said.
