Layoffs hit local office of modem-maker 2Wire

Layoffs have occurred at 2Wire, an international high-tech firm with offices in Nevada City, a corporate official confirmed Friday.

But the official would not divulge details or the number of Nevada County jobs lost.

Based in San Jose, 2Wire makes modems and other equipment for high-speed, broadband Internet access for home and professional use. The company was hailed for bringing high-paying technology jobs to the area when it became the first tenant to occupy the Nevada City Tech Center in April 2007.

The company has no plans to close the office on Providence Mine Road; the global firm has undergone adjustments in recent months to become more efficient and cost-effective, 2Wire spokesman Paul Brunato said.

“To make sure we stayed healthy, we had to make difficult choices to let some people go,” Brunato said. “I can’t say from which offices or how many.”

The front doors of the 2Wire building were locked at lunchtime Friday, and no receptionist was in sight. Several workers who came to the front door referred all questions to the firm’s headquarters, then locked the door again.

Few vehicles occupied the parking lot, but Brunato said that could have reflected the fact it was Good Friday.

“This is a challenging economy, so we had to look at reorganizing,” Brunato said. “The (Nevada City) office is operational.”

From April 2007 to February 2008, 2Wire’s staff in Nevada City grew from 28 to 59 as the firm took on more engineers, Brunato said in a previous interview.

At that time, then vice-president Steve Maher said about 60 percent of the hires were local, while the rest were from out of the area.

Maher is no longer working there, workers at the Nevada City office said Friday.

The firm was founded in 1998 and has customers including AT&T, Telmex, BT, EMBARQ, Bell Canada, SingTel and others, according to the company Web site.

The firm has offices in Arizona, Texas, Georgia, India, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Latin America, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
