Training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is proving to be a lifesaver for employees of the Nevada Irrigation District.
The NID Board of Directors heard a report Wednesday on the second incident in the past year in which district employees were involved in potential lifesaving rescues.
The board viewed a videotaped news report from KOVR-Channel 13 in Sacramento which covered a March 30 incident at NIDs Placer County maintenance yard off Gold Hill Road.
The story recounted how Bob MacDonald, a Grass Valley resident who works as NIDs assistant maintenance superintendent for Placer County, responded to a motorists call for help. The woman pulled over near the NID yard and screamed that her daughter was having a seizure and had stopped breathing.
MacDonald administered CPR while other employees called 911 and comforted the distraught mother. Within a minute, the little girl began breathing and crying. Emergency crews later took her to the hospital.
Last July, NID Operations Department employee Nathan Allen and his wife, Erica, were at the South Yuba River near Bridgeport when they heard cries for help. A Marysville man was being pulled from 8 feet of water. The Allens administered CPR until the victim started breathing and his heart started beating again.
NID board President John Drew commended the swift actions of the employees and NIDs CPR-First Aid training program. Were proud of our people. Theyre ready to step up when things like this happen, he said.
In other business, NID directors:
Approved the purchase of six new trucks for $162,000. The vehicles are being purchased at fleet prices offered through the state.
Discussed the concepts of special water rates for commercial agriculture and for domestic customers who use low amounts of water. Staff and legal counsel will look into the potential for these kind of rates and how they might fit in under rate guidelines
established by Prop. 218.
Held a retirement presentation for Business Coordinator Bill Gann, who closes out a 22-year career with the district on Friday.
The next regular meeting of the NID Board of Directors will be held at 9 a.m. on Apr. 22 at the NID Business Center in Grass Valley. NID board meetings are open to the public.
