After a brief illness at the age of 82, Jack Warren Bogue passed away Jan. 19 in Grass Valley.

Born 1926 in Wichita, Kan., to Leroy and Bernice Bogue, his family moved to Santa Fe, N.M., in his youth. There, he attended Santa Fe High School where he played baseball and football and was active in the drama club. In 1943 at the age of 17 he interrupted his education to join the U.S. Navy serving during World War II as a seaman in the South Pacific Campaign until the end of the war. Returning to Santa Fe, he graduated from high school, then began working with his father in the print shop at the local newspaper. In 1948 he married Jean Shriver, his wife for 54 years until her death in 2002. He worked as a printer, primarily as a journeyman linotype operator for many years at the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper, as well as in El Paso, Texas; Wichita, Kan.; Los Angeles; and Chicago, Ill., retiring in 1988.

In retirement, Jack served a number of civic and charitable organizations, particularly as a teaching assistant at grammar schools and Little League umpire in the various communities where he lived; as a volunteer and fund raiser for the Literacy Volunteers of America, Winters Healthcare Foundation raising funds as the ‘Gold-and-Silver Man;’ the Hospitality House and United Methodist Church in Grass Valley, where he was active in their community outreach activities. In Grass Valley he was known as “Grandpa Jack” while collecting funds at Friday’s Market for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

He is survived by his sister, Eleanor Goss; brother, Pete Bogue; stepson and daughter-in-law, William and Patricia Cameron; grandchildren Catlyn, Joel and Sean Cameron; and great-grandchildren Zachary, Bayla and Trinity.
