Women of Worth has received a grant of $15,000 to help women escaping domestic violence to move into permanent housing.
The grant will launch WOWs Fresh Start Housing Project, a new program through the Cedar Ridge-based nonprofit that will provide up to $1,000 per client toward the first months rent, security deposit and establishing utility service.
Many women leave their abusers with only what they can carry, said WOW Outreach and Development Director Wendi Lehman. If they stay at a domestic violence shelter temporarily, they still need to find a home of their own after 60 to 90 days. The WHO grant gives women and their children resources to acquire stable, permanent housing and a chance for a fresh start.
The grant comes from the Dallas-based Women Helping Others Foundation, which has awarded more than $3.5 million to more than 330 organizations throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico since 1993.
