Timbering considered near Malakoff Diggins

A plan to preserve a property for timbering near Malakoff Diggins goes to the Nevada County Planning Commission on Thursday.

Commissioners will consider a rezone application by William S. Roth for 357 acres located near Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park and the Humbug Trail.

“What he gets out of it is a tax break,” said associate county planner Jessica Hankins.

The change will lock in a contract to preserve the property for forest production for a minimum of 10 years, similar to a Williamson Act agreement for agricultural land.

Timber was harvested from the property several years ago, and Roth has a conservation easement with the Nevada County Land Trust. The next timber harvest is expected in about 20 years, according to the planning commission staff report.

The commission also will review the final environmental impact report for the Higgins Marketplace, a retail and business area in the southern county on Highway 49, just south of Combie Road.

Commissioners will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Board of Supervisors chambers at the Rood Administrative Center, 950 Maidu Ave., Nevada City.
