Fifteen-year-old Morgin Sheppard of Rough and Ready, the reigning Miss Penn Valley Junior Rodeo Queen, recently attended the 50th Anniversary of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
Some of the highlights of her trip were to meet and talk with Miss Rodeo America, Amy Sue Wilson, and WNFR all-around cowboy Trevor Brazil.
Out of the contestants she spoke with, Sheppard said all of them asked where Penn Valley was located. That is, except for two. World Champions Walt Woodard (team roping) and Luke Branquinho (steer wrestling), both California natives, have both competed in rodeo events in Grass Valley and Penn Valley.
In addition to her many appearances as queen, Sheppard also is competing this year in High School rodeo.
In the December, she was the high point cowgirl, winning the two-day average in girls breakaway roping and receiving points in all six events in which she competed: barrel racing, pole bending, team roping, break away roping, goat tying and cutting.
Sheppard currently ranks in fourth place in the girls all-around after four rodeos.
