Darren and Tisha Hamberlin welcomed their first child, Tanner, on New Years Day. Tanner was the first baby born in Nevada County in 2009.
Tisha Hamberlins students bet that she wouldnt return to school after the Christmas holidays.
The sixth-grade teacher at Union Hill School scoffed at the notion, seeing as how she wasnt due to give birth for another month. But they sent her off on vacation with gift cards and a handprint kit.
I thought they were ridiculous, she joked. I guess they were right.
At 7:02 p.m. Thursday, Tisha and Darren Hamberlin of Nevada City welcomed Tanner Michael Hamberlin, born one month ahead of schedule. Tanner is Nevada Countys first baby of 2009, greeting life at five pounds, one ounce, and measuring 181⁄2 inches long.
The Hamberlins had no idea Tanner was coming. They spent a quiet New Years Eve with friends before going home. It wasnt until Tishas water broke that they realized it was time.
I told Darren that I didnt pee my pants, Tisha Hamberlin said. Tanner was born without the aid of any drugs or painkillers a badge of honor for Mom.
The birth, after several hours of labor, was attended by Tisha Hamberlins family her parents, Tami and Mike Stedman, sisters Tawny and Taryn Stedman, and brother Mike Stedman Jr. Tawny Stedman coached her sister through, while Tami Stedman rubbed her daughters legs.
Its Tami and Mike Stedmans first grandchild. But Mike Stedman, whos not yet 50, said hes not ready to be called Grandpa just yet.
Im way too young. After I turn 50, I wont have a problem with that, he joked.
Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospitals maternity ward gave tiny Tanner a giant basket stuffed with goodies that dwarfed the newborn, for being the first baby of the year.
The birth happened so fast, Tisha Hamberlins baby shower isnt until next Thursday. On Friday afternoon, she hadnt yet called the school to say she wouldnt be in on Monday, it all was all so unexpected.
Im just proud of my husband and my family, and Im a little bit proud that I didnt need pain meds, Tisha Hamberlin said. I feel very blessed.
