Firefighters from the North San Juan Fire District, along with members of the Pike City Fire Department, responded at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to a fire deep in the snow-covered woods on Cruzon Grade and Back Bone Road, near Malakoff Diggins State Historical Park.
First responders found a small 20-by-30 foot wooden structure that was fully involved. The structure, used as a bathhouse and sauna, was heated by a wood stove. Neighbors reported that the fire apparently started in the wood stove, said North San Juan Deputy Chief Jason Flores.
Because of the deep snow in the area and the inaccessibility of the structure, firefighters had to lay more than 800 feet of fire hose just to get water on the fire.
Flores said that the structure was just about on the ground when firefighters first arrived.
There were no injuries and the financial loss is yet to be determined.
