TAHOE CITY Early winter weather has proved to be a tease as persistent warm conditions are melting earlier snow, dashing hopes of resorts and skiers who planned to open their season this weekend.
But a cooling trend next week offers a glimmer for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Squaw Valley USA: They have rescheduled a light opening for Thanksgiving day, with Papoose, Squaw Kids, and Lower Exhibition open for skiing by next week, spokeswoman Savannah Cowley said.
Northstar-at-Tahoe: The other resort slated to open this weekend also has pushed the tentative opening day into late next week.
Depending on the weather, officials hope to open Nov. 26 with rideable terrain near the Mainstreet area.
As temperatures permit, our snowmaking team is ready and waiting, said spokeswoman Jessica Van Pernis said.
Alpine Meadows: Officials still are shooting for a Nov. 26 opening, with snow making equipment ready for low temperatures. Snowmakers will concentrate on covering the areas near Kangaroo Lift, Meadow Chair, and Roundhouse, spokeswoman Rachael Woods said.
We like to have a beginner area open early, Woods said.
Mount Rose: With a 5- to 10-inch base, Mount Rose plans to continue its early season operating schedule, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, with lift tickets for $20. Ponderosa Run is open, and more terrain park features are expected with access off the Flying Jenny Conveyor.
With our altitude and limited direct sun exposure, we are still holding on to what snow we have, spokesman Mike Pierce said.
Boreal Mountain Resort: Officials are prepared for snowmaking conditions, and existing snow is holding up with one operating lift, one run, and a terrain park.
Diamond Peak Ski Resort is preparing for a Dec. 11 opening.
Homewood Resort is set for a Dec. 12 opening.
South Lake options
Heavenly Mountain Resort will open as conditions permit, its Web site reported.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort has pus
hed back their opening to at least Thanksgiving weekend, conditions permitting.
Sierra-at-Tahoe hasnt announced a tentative opening date.
