Sharon Kathleen Spellman (also known as Gordon) of Nevada City died Nov. 16 in her home. She was 65.
Memorial services will begin with a closed-casket visitation and rosary/vigil service, 5 to 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 23, at Hooper & Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City. A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 24, at St. Canice Catholic Church, after which a reception will take place at 1 p.m. at the Stonehouse Restaurant in Nevada City. Burial will take place at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery.
She was born on Oct. 19, 1943, in San Jose to Mary Margaret Cook and Patrick Dominic Spellman, both deceased. After her mother divorced and remarried, Ms. Spellman was raised by her mother and stepfather, Robert Raymond Gordon, also deceased. She later reunited with her birth father and kept in close contact with him and his family. After completing high school and marrying her first husband, Charles Corsello, she took a job at the Lockheed Missiles and Space Company where she worked until her first child, Corey, was born in 1968. In 1972, she moved to Nevada City with her daughter and second husband, Dana Milner. She purchased property three miles out of town where she and her second husband designed and built their home from the ground up. Her second child, Thomas, was born in 1974.
Ms. Spellman was a poet and writer. She taught for the Poetry in the Schools program and ran her own poetry show on KVMR radio. She also worked at various bookstores in Nevada City. After having taken classes at Sierra College in Rocklin, she attended UC Berkeley, majoring in literature.
Ms. Spellman will be remembered most for her deep love and devotion to family and friends. She also will be remembered for her local community involvement, her strong commitment to protecting the environment as well as her efforts to help end global war and suffering.
Ms. Spellman is survived by her two children, Corey Heller and Thomas Spellman; her siblings, Mike Gordon, Charles Gordon, Patricia Casey and Mike Spellman, as well as her three grandchildren.
