Forest Lake seeks second-round ‘upset’

Print Comment
Forest Lake Christian’s Falcons might be the No. 11 seed in the Division V volleyball playoffs, but the south county squad gets another chance tonight to prove their power rating isn’t worth the paper its printed on.

The Falcons (16-9), fresh off a 3-1 win over sixth-seeded Faith Christian on Tuesday, travel to Modesto for a quarterfinal matchup with No. 3 Big Valley Christian.

The Lions (19-10), who shared the Harvest Christian League championship with Wilton Christian, enter the match with 11 wins in their past 12 matchups.

But Big Valley had big\ problems dispatching 14th-seed Sacramento Country Day (14-10) in first-round play Tuesday. The Lions rallied from an early two games to one deficit to defeat Country Day 25-14, 24-26, 24-26, 25-9, 15-8.

Although it was the Falcons second match of the current season, Forest Lake Christian did defeat Sac Country Day 3-0 on Sept. 2.

In Tuesday’s win, Big Valley Christian was led by its senior trio of outside hitters in Tiffany Miller, Tiffany Ingram and Jennifer Masui, which combined for 24 kills on the night.

The winner of tonight’s match advances to the D-V section semifinals against the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 2 Stone Ridge Christian (14-8) and No. 7 Ripon Christian (16-14).

Division I

Top-seed Nevada Union, which has won 25 straight section tournament matches, resumes its pursuit of a record seventh straight section crown when No. 8 Rodriguez arrives at Ali Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal match.

Rodriguez (18-5), which shared the Solano County Athletic Conference title with Benicia, defeated No. 9 Lodi in three straight games Tuesday (25,12, 25-17, 25-9).

The Mustangs have won four straight matches, with their last loss coming to Bella Vista at the West Campus Tournament in late October.

Meanwhile, the Miners (26-9) also have won four straight matches, including Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Franklin of Elk Grove. NU’s last defeat came to Oak Ridge in the St. Francis Super 8 Invite last month.

Tonight’s winner will square off in the semifinals against the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 5 Modesto (17-4) and No. 4 Davis (21-8).
