In a response to low-income school children and seniors suffering in a troubled economy, the Grass Valley Elks will begin offering healthy snacks and food baskets.
Beginning Dec. 1, the Elks will team up with the Nevada County Food Bank to distribute healthy mid-morning snacks to area school classrooms as part of its new project called H.O.P.E. Helping Other People Eat.
Theres a lot of them that just dont know why they are hungry or cranky. They havent had breakfast, said Lari Solomon, H.O.P.E. project manager.
Already, 14 schools are enrolled in the food bank program that also distributes bag lunches to low-income housing areas when school is out of session.
Funded by a $7,500 grant awarded by the Elks National Foundation, local organizers hope to maintain the project through regular fundraisers and donations, Solomon said.
Our goal is to get the community more involved, Solomon said.
Also from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 1, volunteers will distribute fresh fruit, vegetables and other staples to seniors at the Elks Lodge at 109 S. School St., Grass Valley. Theyll continue the first Monday of each month.
There are just so many people having a hard time right now, Solomon said. The kids and seniors were priorities.
