From modest beginnings, the Banner Mountain Artisans annual sale has grown into quite a local holiday tradition with fans eagerly awaiting it.
Begun in 2004 with 16 artisans from Nevada City to Penn Valley and located in a Banner Mountain neighborhood of Grass Valley, the group has doubled in size and moved to larger quarters the Nevada City Elks Lodge #518 located on Hwy. 49 in Nevada City for its two-day holiday sale, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 8-9).
Each year attendance has grown proportionately. Says a founder of the group, Joan Unter, The first year (2003) we had 200 customers, the next year 300, then 500 and in 2007 we had over 700 customers!
I think we have developed a reputation for having high quality handcrafted items for very reasonable prices and, of course, it's always good to buy locally and support the community! We have a committee that juries all prospective artisans and even have a waiting list for those who wish to join.
Nine new people are included this year, including Marie Moore of Glass Dreams who has worked glass for 37; she offers stained and fused glass, as well as original focal beads used in jewelry. Returning artists include Karen Hinrichs with her watercolors and Helen Lay with her Butterfly Knits.
The range of media is pretty extensive, almost 20 categories. They range from art to decorate with, jewelry to wear, soap and oils to use, even yummy chocolates to eat then and there or give as gifts.
Proud member Helen Lay says customers praise tells the group it is on the right track. Previous customers have commented on the high quality and wide variety of hand made items for sale.
A coffee and dessert lounge is part of the fun, as well as a Gift Basket drawing.
During the rest of the year, members of Banner Mountain Artisans sell from their homes or in local stores and galleries.
