Ed Yarborough, 55, is a telemarketer who was born and raised in Nevada County and still has relatives in the area.
Yarborough graduated with a degree in literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He became active in politics while spending summers volunteering for Attorney General Jerry Brown just before the former governor became mayor of Oakland.
In 1994, Yarborough thought about running for Nevada County supervisor, but decided not to.
When St. Patrick's Catholic Church began a monthly Spanish-language Mass in 2006, he picketed the church, accusing it of harboring illegal immigrants.
The candidate wrote letters to The Union blasting the City Council's selection process when Janet Arbuckle was picked to fulfill Dean Williams' term in 2006. A subsequent letter outlined his fear that Nevada County will become a haven for illegal aliens.
