Catherine Francis Hannigan Hunter was born in San Francisco on July 18, 1947, the fifth of seven children of John and Evelyn Hannigan.
Following high school, Mrs. Hunter went to work for Stanford Universitys Sloan Graduate School of Business.
On Valentines Day 1970, she married Steven Louis Hunter. In addition to enjoying many outdoor activities, in 1971 she received her private pilots license.
Graduating from San Jose State University in 1976 with a degree in business, she continued her education at Sacramento State University, obtaining multiple teaching credentials.
The Hunter family put down roots in Colfax in 1977, when they built their own home. Though Mr. Hunter was trained as an electrical engineer, Mrs. Hunter wired the house, leaving him to try his hand at plumbing. Shortly after completing their home daughter Katherine was born.
In the fall of 1977, Mrs. Hunter was hired as Colfax High Schools registrar and career center technician. She soon became the business teacher in a department with manual typewriters and paper accounting ledgers. Mrs. Hunter first upgraded to electric typewriters and would later introduce computers. To maximize her allotted funding, Mrs. Hunter purchased individual components, assembled the systems, and loaded the software herself.
Mrs. Hunter served as varsity softball coach, cheerleader advisor, and the district technology advisor. She started S-Club, a chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America, and established the CHS Blood Drive. An accomplished artist, Mrs. Hunter started the Art Mixed Media program.
Mrs. Hunter was a 30-year member of Soroptimist International, a Campfire leader, and was very involved with Saint Dominics Catholic Church serving as a Eucharist Minister, Acolyte, lector/reader, and led singing at evening mass. She generated the roster of monthly parishioner assignments and directed setup of the Christmas manger display.
Mrs. Hunter was a wonderful wife, incredible mother and amazing friend. She will be remembered for her selfless and courageous nature, devoted friendship, and unfailing optimism.
She is survived by her loving husband Steve, daughter Katie Hunter Lucero, son-in-law Dewey Lucero, and many extended family members and friends.
The rosary will take place at Lassilla Funeral Chapel in Auburn on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. A Catholic funeral mass will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. at Saint Dominics Catholic Church in Colfax. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately at the Sierra Vista Community Center in Colfax.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Cathie Hunter Scholarship fund at Colfax High School.
