Cacti and palm trees have been stricken from downtown Nevada City’s landscape.
The Nevada City Planning Commission rejected requests from two restaurant owners to decorate their signage with flora depicting species not native to the Sierra.
Planning commissioners on Thursday declined to approve signage decorated with cactus for the Dos Banditos Cafe at 408 Broad St., while also rejecting a sign decorated with palm trees for the unfinished Beach Hut Deli at 104 Union St.
Both business owners said their enterprises will continue as normal despite the commission’s rejection of their logos.
“We’re going to go ahead with the bland sign they wanted us to go with in the first place,” said Dos Banditos owner Eric Engstrom. Engstrom does not plan to appeal the decision.
Engstrom would also drop a petition he started aimed at stopping the opening of franchise stores — such as the Beach Hut Deli — in the historic downtown, he said.
“I’m over it already,” Engstrom added.
The deli’s owner, Cindy Smith, said she was pleased with the commission’s decision. “We love it,” she added.
The palm trees have been removed from the sign in favor of more standard block lettering.
Smith also was glad Engstrom was dropping his petition against the downtown franchise, she said.
“He has no ground to stand on,” she said. The shop is expected to open sometime in September.
The process “went smoothly, and we’re willing to work with the city,” she said. “We’re happy with the design they picked.”
