Dos Banditos sign rejected

Nevada City Planning Commissioners rejected a new sign for the Dos Banditos food tent on Broad Street Thursday because some felt the picture of a cactus in the middle of the sign was unnecessary.

They told Eric Engstrom, owner of the business, to come back to the commission’s next meeting on Aug. 28 with options regarding the size of the sign as well alternatives to the cactus.

Engstrom wants a sign that reads “Dos Banditos Taqueria” to be attached over the entrance of his food tent. A cactus is designed to appear between the words “Banditos” and “ Taqueria.” “I couldn’t approve the sign as it appears,” said Commissioner John Parent. “I don’t think we need the cactus. They are not going to sell cactus.”

But Engstrom was reluctant to remove the picture, saying it symbolized the Latin American cuisine Don Banditos serves.

A number of commissioners also wanted the sign to be scaled down.

“I think six and a half feet (wide) is too much,” Evans Phelps said. “If I can get (a sign that’s) four feet (wide), I’ll be happy.”

Engstrom is leading a cam paign against themed businesses in the historic downtown, spurred by an application by a franchisee of the Beach Hut Deli — which uses surfboards and other ocean side decor.
