City should zone certain areas to allow livestock/pets

Print Comment
I was very interested in the recent article in The Union, "Learn to raise poultry, eat for a lifetime."

I believe having flexibility and variety in the types of pets and/or livestock permitted inside the city limits is an excellent and sensible move. Any and all healthy activities available for children will be a huge benefit. Families can learn to raise at least some of their own food.

Rabbits particularly are quiet and odor-free. The slight noise from poultry is quite pleasant, with the possible exception of roosters, and flies can be controlled with the excellent environmentally friendly solutions, such as predatory wasps which destroy fly lava in the animal wastes.

Certain areas within the city limits could be rezoned to allow these animals while keeping other areas available for folks who prefer to distance themselves from these activities.

Even though I don't live within the city limits, I wanted to voice my enthusiasm for this change, as my own grandchildren enjoy the animals on my place so much and this enhances their childhood experiences, providing skills and memories to last a lifetime.
