Readers' Corner: Aug. 11, 2008

Thanks for sweet treats

Attention fairgoers: Every time you bought a corn dog from Job's Daughters, a taco or carmel corn from the Lions Club, or a knish, a lemonade, deep-fried onions, nachos, soft ice cream and other fair food from Treat Street vendors, you also supported essential programs in western Nevada County for youth, the elderly, people with disabilities, firefighters, children in crisis and others.

That's because many of the groups that open food booths for events at the Nevada County Fairgrounds support, not only their own wonderful activities with the sales, but also share the wealth with groups such as the Nevada Union High School choir and local Cub Scouts.

So thanks to all who bought treats on Treat Street, to all the organizations that work hard to keep the booths going, and to all the volunteers who operated them. Tens of thousands of dollars will support much good work in our community as a result.

Laundry thief, repent

A few days ago, Tina Grunewald was doing her laundry in a Nevada City laundromat when she left to run a few errands. When she returned, a thief had made off with her whites and delicates - about $300 of her favorite blouses and jammies.

Tina never thought that, in a nice, quiet town like Nevada City, she'd have to worry about her clothes at the laundromat (she's originally from Detroit).

"It shouldn't happen!" she mourns. "It's not O.K. to steal from anywhere!"

The business' cameras showed a man opening the machine, but Tina says no one is following up on the case.

Tina asks that whoever took these clothes she loves do the right thing and bring them back. (The stuff probably doesn't look good on the guy anyway.)

Fundraiser for hospital stroke program

All kinds of people are coming together to support our local hospital's efforts to become a center for stroke response and care.

Here's your chance to help: The Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation is hosting a kayak poker run at 9 a.m. Aug. 24 at Scotts Flat Lake. The participation fee is $50 for single kayakers and $75 for doubles. The fee includes a brunch.

You can rent a kayak for half price at Wolf Creek Wilderness at 595 E. Main St. in Grass Valley. And kayaking is really, really easy.

The hospital foundation is trying to raise $100,000 to support the new stroke program.

For more information about the program, to register for the event or to donate prizes, call the hospital foundation at 477-9700.

Readers' Corner is compiled by The Union staff. To submit items, e-mail them to readers@theunion.com, and put "RC" and your topic in the subject line, or call 477-4230.
